Firm vs. Soft Mattress: Which Is Right for You?

3 min read

Myth or fact: “The firmer the mattress, the better it is for your back.”

Myth. There isn't one firmness that works for everyone.

Firmness is the number one question guests ask at Snooze Mattress in Cornelius, and it's the one most people get wrong when they shop on their own. Here's how to think about it.

Firmness and support aren't the same thing

Firmness is how a mattress feels when you first lie down: plush, medium or firm.

Support is how well the mattress keeps your spine aligned all night.

A firm mattress can still be unsupportive if it pushes against your shoulders and hips and leaves gaps at your waist. A softer mattress can be very supportive if it has a strong core underneath the comfort layers. Comfort is what you feel for five minutes. Support is what determines how you sleep all night.

Firmness by sleep position

Sleep positionOften fits bestWhy
SideSoft to mediumLets shoulders and hips sink in so the spine stays straight
BackMedium to medium-firmKeeps hips level with shoulders and supports the lower back
StomachMedium-firm to firmKeeps the hips from sinking and arching the lower back
CombinationMediumBalances cushioning and support across positions

These are starting points, not rules. Your body is the final word.

Your body changes the answer

Two side sleepers can need different firmness levels. Body weight, shoulder width and where you carry your weight all change how deeply you sink into a mattress.

  • Lighter sleepers may find a firm mattress feels like a board, because they don't press into it enough to get pressure relief.
  • Heavier sleepers often need more supportive cores so they don't sink too far, even if the top feels soft.
  • Couples may need different feels on each side, or a mattress that balances both.

Three signs your mattress is too soft

  1. Your hips sink.
  2. Your spine bows.
  3. You wake up stiff.

Three signs your mattress is too firm

  1. Your shoulder or hip feels sore or numb when you lie on your side.
  2. You feel pressure points instead of an even feel.
  3. You toss and turn looking for a comfortable spot.

Don't forget temperature

If you sleep hot, the materials matter as much as the firmness. Some softer foams hug the body and hold more heat. Hybrid and cooling designs can help. Tell your Sleep Coach if you're a hot sleeper so they can factor it into your fit.

Ask a better question

Instead of asking “What's the best mattress?” ask “What's the best mattress for me?”

That's exactly what Dream Mapping answers. Dream Mapping, our pressure mapping technology, shows how your body presses into each mattress, so you can see whether a surface is too firm, too soft or just right for you. No guessing. Just data and a Sleep Coach to help you read it.
